Walthamstow Central The work to improve the station is ongoing. The station entrance is being improved with new canopies installed. The major piece of work which still has to be done is the completion of the underpass from the bus station into the Underground. When the bus station was built the tunnel under the road was constructed, but the entrance from the tunnel to the Underground is still to be done. I have been in correspondence with London Underground about this work. What I am now being told is that the work to complete the subway is now due to start in about September 2006. While the building work is done the small Underground ticket office will be closed. One difficulty which this will create is that this is the only office in the station which can sell or renew Oyster Cards. The National Rail ticket office, above ground, does not sell the cards as at present National Rail refuse to deal with Oyster Cards at any of their ticket offices. I am asking London Underground to look at alternatives, so that the station is not left completely without Oyster Card facilities during the building works. I am also concerned that when the subway does open it is properly supervised and policed. The Police have had a fair degree of success in getting rid of many of the ticket touts who used to hang around the station. I gave statements to the Police for use in getting Anti-Social Behaviour Orders against some of the worst offenders. What I want to ensure is that the subway does not become a place for unsavoury characters like the touts to plague the travelling public. Dec 2005
