Neil Gerrard to Stand Down at Next Election Neil Gerrard, Labour MP for Walthamstow since 1992, has announced that he will be standing down at the next General Election. Mr Gerrard made the announcement at a meeting of his constituency Labour Party earlier this year Speaking at the meeting Mr Gerrard said that he had decided that as he will be 65 this year, and so probably 67 or 68 at the time of the next election it was time for him to step down. “I know that some of my Parliamentary colleagues work on well into their 70’s and I have no criticism of that” said Mr Gerrard “but it is not something I feel that I want to do myself.” “It has been a privilege to serve as the MP for Walthamstow for almost 15 years, and I will continue to do all I can for my constituents in the time from now until the election, and to contribute to policy debates in Parliament and in the Labour Party. This is a purely personal decision, and not for political reasons.” The Labour candidate at the next election in Walthamstow will be Stella Creasy who was selected at a packed meeting of local Labour Party members. After the meeting Neil Gerrard said "I know that Stella will be an excellent candidate and then a first class MP who will work hard for all the people of Walthamstow. I am looking forward to working with her in the period from now until the general election." November 2007 |
