Safer Stations Campaign I am joining together with other London Labour MPs to campaign for improved safety at stations. On the Network Rail lines running through Walthamstow none of the stations are staffed in the late evening. Even at a busy station like Walthamstow Central there can be times when the platforms on the Chingford to Liverpool Street line can be relatively deserted. It makes passengers concerned about their safety, and less likely to use the train. Other stations on the line, which because there is no Underground service, are less busy, can feel even more threatening. I want to see staff available much later in the evening than is currently the case. I know that it will not be sufficient to have one person on their own in the booking hall, as that puts them at risk as well as the passengers, but we do need the money spent to provide a safer environment for the travelling public. I believe in any case that if people feel safer they will be more likely to use the trains, and bring in more revenue. A petition will be presented to Parliament on this issue. If you want to support the campaign please download the petition, and return signed copies to me at the address on the petition form. Right click the link and choose 'Save target as' to save the petition as a PDF file. Feb 2006 |
