Neil Gerrard supports summer long safer sex campaign Walthamstow MP Neil Gerrard will be supporting this year’s National Condom Week and the ‘He Says, You Say’ summer long safer sex campaign, both of which are sponsored by Durex. National Condom Week (8-13 May) is being fronted by Atomic Kitten’s Liz McClarnon and has been endorsed by the UK’s leading sexual health charities – Brook, Marie Stopes International, National AIDS Trust and Terrence Higgins Trust – plus the Public Health Minister, Caroline Flint MP. The week will launch the summer long safer sex campaign, which has been designed to get young people, particularly young women, thinking about safer sex and to equip them with answers to excuses that their partners might use to not wear a condom. Mr Gerrard said he was delighted to be able to support National Condom Week and the He Says You Say summer campaign. The ‘He Says, You Say’ campaign follows research among nurses, health advisers, GPs, school nurses and pharmacists. They said 16-24 year-old women most frequently ask for advice about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia, but many frequently say they do not feel able to say no to unprotected sex – potentially putting their lives at risk and gambling with unplanned pregnancy. Via the campaign website (www.hesaysyousay.co.uk) young people are encouraged to hear reasons men use for not wearing condoms, listen to suggested responses and enter their own favourites – with a chance to win a Club 18-30 Holiday if they do so or an Ipod Nano for under-18s. One million postcards advertising the website and 800,000 free Durex Pleasuremax condoms will be distributed during the course of the campaign and there will be special promotions on Durex condoms sold in major retailers throughout the campaign. High Street fashion chain New Look has also agreed to display ‘He Says, You Say’ posters in its changing rooms in stores across the country. In addition, other campaign activities include:
