MP Angry at Post Office Closure

Neil Gerrard, Labour MP for Walthamstow, has expressed his anger at the decision by the Post Office to close down the branch office in Grove Road, Walthamstow. Mr Gerrard says that he believes that the consultation carried out by the Post Office was a sham, and that the decision had been made before the consultation.

"I had many letters and calls from constituents who will be affected by the closure and were opposed to it" says Mr Gerrard. "I wrote to the Post Office myself and passed on a petition to them. I am convinced that everyone who replied to the consultation was opposed to the closure. The effects will be particularly felt by elderly people who will not have a convenient alternative."

"I had a reply to my letter dated 9th January from the Post Office saying that all the representations they had received would be taken into account. Just four days later I had another letter saying that the final decision to close the branch had been taken. I really do not believe that the replies to the consultation were taken seriously."

Along with other London Labour MPs Mr Gerrard is taking up the whole question of closures with the Post Office, reflecting the anger of people across London at the continued programme of closures.
