Parliament

Below are links to some of the speeches I have made in Parliament, since the election of 2001, links to other websites that give information about MPs, and to information about questions I have asked and my voting record.

With 646 MPs in Parliament it is frequently not possible for every MP who wants to speak in a debate to be able to do so, especially in debates on controversial issues. The Speaker will generally give preference to an MP who has not spoken in the Commons recently.

Please don't assume that because I haven't made a speech on something that I don't care about it. I may have tried to speak, and not been called by the Speaker; often I will have had to attend a Committee, or do other Parliamentary work, which has clashed with the debate.

If you are interested in an issue which is not covered in these speeches try the 'News and Views' page to see if it is covered there or email me via the 'Contact Me' page to find out what my views are.

Each year I distribute a report to constituents. It is always difficult to ensure that every house or flat gets the delivery, but if you didn't you can download the report here as a PDF file. Right click on the link and then select "Save Target As" to download and save the report to your computer .... 2007 Parliamentary Report

My Voting Record

Hansard, the record of all debates in Parliament, contains details of every vote which is taken. However it isn't easy to use for finding voting details, because to do so you need to know the date of the vote. One oddity about the way votes are recorded in the Commons is that there is no way of an MP recording an abstention on a vote.

If what you are interested in is to find out how I voted on a particular important issue the best sources are websites which regularly record the results of the more controversial votes. Two which are useful in this respect, and make it quite easy to find the vote you want, are the Politics Guardian and Public Whip.

If there is a vote you are interested in which doesn't show up on these records, please email me and I will let you know how I voted, and why.

Websites about Parliament and MPs

Apart from voting records, there are a number of websites now which give information about what an MP has been doing in Parliament, including speeches and questions. Theyworkforyou provides good up to date information.

Written Questions, Early Day Motions, Register of Interests

Follow this link to see a list of the Early Day Motions I have signed in the current session of Parliament.

My entry in the register of Members Interests shows all my declared interests as an MP.

For detailed searches on anything I have done in Parliament, including written questions, you can use the House of Commons website Search engine. Find the box which entitled "Who is speaking", enter 'Gerrard' in this box, select the type of material and range of dates you are interested in from the list provided, then click on 'SEARCH'.
