WALTHAMSTOW
CONSTITUENCY Walthamstow is in North-East London, and is one of three Parliamentary constituencies within the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The Parliamentary seat of West Walthamstow was held by Clement Attlee during the years in which he was Prime Minister, and was traditionally a Labour seat. East Walthamstow was a marginal seat, and switched hands several times after 1945. The two seats were merged into one in the early 1970's and further boundary changes took place just before the 1997 election. It is bordered by the Lea Valley, which is a Regional Park, to the west, and Epping Forest land forms much of the eastern boundary. Walthamstow consists of eight wards; Chapel End, Wood Street, Higham Hill, William Morris, Hoe Street, High Street, Markhouse and Lea Bridge Some of the best known features of Walthamstow are shown in the photographs above. The first from the left is the internationally renowned William Morris Gallery, which was for a time the home of the pioneer socialist and designer, whose name it bears. Next is the Ancient House in Walthamstow Village, which has recently been beautifully restored. Waltham Forest Town Hall is one of the most ornate municipal buildings in London and is set in open grounds. Walthamstow High Street boasts the longest street market in Western Europe, and is adjacent to the main shopping centre in the area, and the new bus station. The final picture shows Sobers Maxine, a racing greyhound formerly jointly owned by me and my neighbouring MP, Harry Cohen. She raced at Walthamstow Stadium, which is the most popular greyhound racing track in the country, and is now happily retired.
